My foreign friends have asked me about my hometown so often that I decided to write an article about it. These are my favourite places in town that I recommend highly to see, visit or do in Budapest. Come, let me show you around.
Art, History & Culture
Hungarian National Gallery
If you want to understand Hungary, start here — inside Buda Castle, where centuries of art unfold like a long, thoughtful conversation. The Gothic altarpieces, the bold modern works, the quiet portraits… they all whisper something about who we’ve been and who we’re becoming. And when you step outside, the city stretches beneath you in a way that makes everything feel connected. It’s a place that invites you to slow down and really see.

Aquincum Museum
Long before Budapest existed, there was Aquincum — a Roman city humming with life. Walking through its ruins feels like stepping into a memory older than language. The mosaics, the tools, the fragments of everyday life remind you that people have always loved, worked, and dreamed here. It’s a quiet, grounding place that pulls you gently into the past.

Light Art Museum (LAM)
LAM is where Budapest gets playful — a world of glowing installations and shifting colours tucked inside an old market hall. It’s immersive, surprising, and a little surreal, the kind of place where you forget the outside world for a while. Light becomes something you can almost touch. If you love art that makes you feel like a kid again, this is your spot.

Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum)
Heroes’ Square is grand enough on its own, but the Museum of Fine Arts adds a sense of timelessness to it. Inside, you wander from ancient Egypt to Renaissance Italy to the quiet intensity of Spanish masters. It’s a museum that doesn’t rush you — it lets you linger, breathe, and take in beauty at your own pace. A sanctuary for anyone who finds comfort in art.

Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum)
This is where Hungary keeps its heart. The building itself feels like a promise — tall columns, wide steps, a sense of importance. Inside, the story of the nation unfolds in layers: revolutions, kings, poets, everyday people. It’s a place that reminds you that history isn’t just dates; it’s emotion, struggle, and identity.

Gül Baba Türbéje
Up on Rózsadomb, there’s a small, peaceful garden where time seems to soften. The tomb of Gül Baba is surrounded by roses, stone paths, and a view that feels like a quiet blessing. It’s a blend of Ottoman heritage and modern calm, a place to sit, breathe, and let the city fall away for a moment. I come here when I need stillness.

Hungarian Parliament Visitor Centre
Even if politics isn’t your thing, the Parliament building will take your breath away. Inside, gold glows softly, staircases sweep upward, and the Holy Crown sits in a quiet chamber like a heartbeat of history. Walking through it feels like stepping into a story much larger than yourself. It’s one of Budapest’s proudest spaces.

St. Stephen’s Basilica
There’s something grounding about stepping into the basilica — the hush, the height, the way the light filters through. It’s both grand and intimate, a place where music often fills the air and people pause without quite knowing why. And from the terrace, the city opens up in every direction. It’s a moment you carry with you.

OperaTour – Hungarian State Opera House
The Opera House is elegance carved into stone and velvet. On the tour, you wander through gilded halls and staircases that feel like they were built for another era. Sometimes you even hear a short live performance — a reminder that beauty isn’t just seen, it’s heard. It’s one of the city’s most enchanting buildings.

Nature, Views & Scenic Experiences
Margaret Island (Margitsziget)
If Budapest had a heartbeat, it might be here — in the rustle of leaves, the laughter of cyclists, the quiet corners where ruins hide among trees. Margaret Island is where the city comes to rest. It’s simple, green, and endlessly comforting. A place to wander without a plan.

Liberty Statue (Szabadság-szobor)
High above the Danube, the Liberty Statue stands with open arms, watching over the city. The climb is worth every step — not just for the view, but for the feeling of arrival. Up there, Budapest feels vast and gentle all at once. It’s a place that makes you breathe a little deeper.

BalloonFly – City Park Balloon
Floating above City Park in a tethered balloon feels like stepping into a dream. The city spreads out beneath you — rooftops, trees, the curve of the Danube. It’s peaceful, gentle, and strangely intimate. A moment suspended in air.

Zugliget Chairlift (Libegő)
The chairlift glides slowly over the Buda Hills, carrying you above forests and winding paths. It’s quiet up there, the kind of quiet that makes you feel like you’re part of the landscape. At the top, the world feels wide and welcoming. It’s one of Budapest’s simplest, sweetest pleasures.

Food, Drink & Social Life
Szimpla Kert
Szimpla isn’t just a bar — it’s an experience. A jumble of colours, textures, and ideas that somehow makes perfect sense. It’s creative, chaotic, and full of life, the kind of place where you might stay for one drink and end up staying for hours. A true Budapest original.

New York Café
Stepping into the New York Café feels like stepping into a painting — gold, marble, frescoes, soft music. It’s decadent in the best way, a reminder that beauty can be a daily ritual. Whether you come for coffee or just to soak in the atmosphere, it leaves an impression that lingers.

Gozsdu Udvar
Gozsdu is where the city gathers — to eat, to talk, to celebrate, to simply be. The courtyards buzz with energy, from brunch spots to late‑night bars. It’s lively, colourful, and full of stories waiting to happen. If you want to feel Budapest’s pulse, come here.

Central Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok)
This market is a feast for the senses — spices, colours, voices, the smell of fresh produce and warm food. The building itself is a beauty, with its Zsolnay tiles and soaring interior. It’s where tradition meets everyday life. A perfect place to taste the city.

Iconic Budapest Experiences
Széchenyi Spa
There’s nothing quite like soaking in hot thermal water while the steam rises into the cold air. Széchenyi is a Budapest classic — joyful, relaxing, a little magical.
Legenda Danube River Night Cruise
At night, Budapest glows — bridges lit like jewelry, the Parliament shimmering on the water. The Legenda cruise lets you drift through that beauty at a gentle pace. It’s romantic, peaceful, and quietly unforgettable. A perfect way to end a day in the city.

How to get around Budapest
Budapest Card
Budapest is one of those cities where moving around feels surprisingly effortless. The public transportation network is wide, reliable, and woven into everyday life — metros humming beneath the streets, yellow trams gliding along the river, buses and trolleybuses connecting every corner of the city. If you’re visiting, the Budapest Card can make things even smoother: it gives you unlimited travel on all public transport, plus free museum entries, walking tours, and discounts at dozens of attractions. It’s basically a “city key” for travellers who want to explore without thinking too much about tickets.
BudapestGO app
For day‑to‑day navigation, the BudapestGO app is your best friend. It’s the official transport app, and it lets you plan routes, buy and validate tickets, check live departures, and even purchase the special airport bus ticket. Everything happens inside the app — no paper, no machines, no stress. It’s especially handy because Budapest uses a mix of ticket types, and the app keeps them all in one place.
Getting from the airport to the city center is straightforward. The 100E Airport Express runs directly to Deák Ferenc tér, right in the heart of the city, and it operates day and night. If you want a cheaper option, you can take bus 200E to the metro, but most visitors prefer the simplicity of the 100E. Taxis are regulated and safe too — just stick to the official ones at the airport.
Once you’re in the city, the system is intuitive: four metro lines, frequent trams, and buses that fill in the gaps. Tram 2 along the Danube is practically a sightseeing tour on rails, and the 4/6 tram runs 24/7 if you’re out late. Everything is well‑marked, and locals rely on public transport daily, so you’ll never feel out of place hopping on a tram or metro. Budapest rewards curiosity, and its transport network makes exploring feel light and easy.
