Fourth day, Monday, April 29, Aljezur

Where are we now?

We went up to the castle of Aljezur, from where there is a great view in all directions and a view of the whole town like a model train layout. To the east are the highest mountains, to the south there are wind farms everywhere.

The population does not exceed six thousand, despite the fact that the area has been inhabited since 7000 BC.

Aljezur was founded in the 10th century by Berbers, who remained in the region for the next five centuries until the Christian conquest. They were responsible for many of the structures in the region, such as the main castle, but also for the many names dotting the region’s toponym, as well as legends and myths developed by peoples.

The village of Aljezur was taken from the Moors in 1249 during the reign of D. Afonso III by Paio Peres Correia, master of the Order of Santiago.  Christians thanked the Virgin Mary for their successes, and as an extension of faith, Nossa Senhora da Alva (Our Lady of the Dawn) became the patron saint of Aljezur.

Manuel I of Portugal (Alcochete, 31 May 1469 – Lisbon, 13 December 1521); reigned from 1495 to 1521; the most successful king of medieval Portugal; he was from the House of Avis. It was thanks to his reign that discoveries were made.

The weather was getting warmer, so we went to Lagos for a beach, we didn’t even stop in the city. I just ran one.
